Pontericcioli Area 4 Escavations at the Pontericcioli junction (SS Flaminia Km 224) Photo 1
In May of 2004, in the course of the works for the realisation of a junction in SS Flaminia (Km 224), a few hundred metres from the village of Pontericcioli, archaeological emergences were found which involve a vast area. The Tecne Cooperative, in collaboration with the Archaeological Superintendence of the Marche, made the excavation and the survey of these structures. In particular, a significant stretch of the Flaminian Consular Road was uncovered (Photo 1), which, from here, continued to the nearby archaeological area of Pontericcioli with its monumental structures of the late Republican and Augustan Ages. On the downstream side of the road, the foundations of a large building (or buildings ?) were found, dated to the Roman Epoch, probably referable to a functional road service structure (Photos 2, 3, 4). Instead, on the upstream side, graves and the floors of a prehistoric hut were found, significant testimony to the continuity of man’s occupation of this area (Photos 5, 6). Photo 5
