| The Crypt of Chiaserna
The ruins of the Abbey of Saint Michael Archangel can be seen in Chiaserna, at the foot of Mount Petria, in the place that the locals call “Badia”. Of the complex, only the crypt remains intact and it conserve a pink granite column which supported the presbytery. Originally, it was completely underground with respect to the church and was the type of crypt with a curved vaulted ceiling supported by a single central support. The construction of the complex including the Abbey of St. Michael Archangel should probably be inserted in the context of the building "revival" that characterised the IX and X centuries in the Marche territory. The upstream side is now occupied by the only structure remaining, the ground floor of which was probably used for the Chapter meetings. The abbey exercised its maximum influence over the territory in the XII and XIII centuries. Starting in the XV century, it began to show the first signs of deterioration and it was completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1781.
