Itineraries
Itinerary n° 1 Archeological Tour “ On the Roads of the Empire ”. The tour leaves from the archaeological area of Pontericcioli, about 4 km from Cantiano. From here you can walk the ancient trail of the Flaminian Consular Road which, only in this stretch, does not coincide with today's road. Along the route you can admire an imposing foundation wall 50 mt. long and more than 5 mt. high, in gravel conglomerate, locally called "grey stone", from the late Republican Age; a two arch bridge in Corniola from the Augustan Age; the Three Arch Bridge, with evident signs of repeated maintenance operations made through the centuries; a foundation wall in Corniola, in the area where a lost inscription was found relative to an intervention made by Hadrian; the so-called Ponte Voragine, with a singular semicircular arch, in Corniola, also from the Augustan age. Continuing in the direction of Cantiano, along the Flaminian, at S. Rocco, in the midst of the vegetation and the banks of the Burano river, other ruins of a foundation wall in Corniola emerge. The route also includes a stop at the Archaeological-Flaminian Road “G. C. Corsi” Museum, where a piece of Roman flagging has been reconstructed and where the milestone indicating the distance to Rome in miles, datable to 305 A.D., is conserved. From Cantiano, continue in the direction of Cagli, stop at the Gola del Burano, at the Ponte Grosso with two arches, surely traceable to the imposing monumental works on the Flaminian Consular Road commissioned by the Emperor Augustus. Itinerary n° 2 Historical – Cultural Tour. “Castrum Theani: maledicto arneso de guerra”. Taking the famous definition given to the town of Cantiano by Fortebraccio da Montone, the route goes in search of the Fortresses, villages and churches which gave life to the city starting in the XII century. Leaving from Piazza Luceoli, with the Town Hall, the Clock Tower, the Church of S. Nicolò, in neoclassic style and the famous Fountain. The route then goes up to the fortress of S. Ubaldo, on the way there are medieval homes, the Pagella Tower, the only one left of the towers which fortified the imposing walls, the small Church of S. Ubaldo, with a bell tower from the XIV century and the vestiges of the castle of the Counts Gabrielli, fortified by Francesco di Giorgio Martini. The route then descends and returns to Piazza Luceoli, where it continues along via Augusto Fiorucci, where most of the Noble Palazzi left to Cantiano are found, built from the XIV to the XVIII centuries. Then it continues up Via della Torre and Via Colmatrano, a medieval village, characteristically in flower during the summer months, to the Colmatrano Fortress. At the top, the ruins of the Military Tower where Count Bonaccorsi took up residence in the XIII century. The route then descends from the Fortress and continues along IV Novembre, to the Collegiate Church of S. Giovanni Battista, from the XVII century, built on a Latin cross plan. Inside the church, numerous valuable paintings are conserved, including the “Madonna of the Goldfinch”, attributed to the school of Perugino. Continuing on, we find the Church of S. Agostino, with a portal from the XIV century in white and pink stone, with attached cloister with the entrance to the Museums of Cantiano. This itinerary ends with a visit to the Museums. |
